Iceland Ultimate Snacks Meatball Panani Review

Iceland Ultimate Snacks Meatball PaniniHot on the heals of the Sausage & Egg Muffin review, not content with gunning for the McDonald’s snack market, Iceland have decided to go for full spectrum frozen ultimate snack dominance and do a Meatball Panani. In their warped universe, they envisage this product will allow you to beat the lunchtime queue at your local Pret A Manger or Cafe Nero. Why get something vaguely fresh when you can microwave this little beauty in just 2 and a half minutes and it only costs a quid? I was sold.

Iceland Ultimate Snacks Meatball Panini UncookedDescribed on the packet as a ‘Meatball Panini with tomato relish and grated mozzarella cheese’, I had high hopes for this snack after the ultimate let down of the Sausage & Egg Muffin, plus this was going to be my lunch. Getting it out of the box, it did look like a Panini, which was a good start. Following the manufacturers instructions, leaving the inner bag on, I microwaved the Italian roll on its back for a minute and a half, before flipping it over and giving it another minute. The packet warns not to be too hasty getting the bag off or you’ll scald yourself on the hot steam, a lesson I’ve learnt the hard way a while back, but thanks for your concern for my welfare, Iceland.

Iceland Ultimate Snacks Meatball Panini InsideSo what does it taste like? My first bite was a meatball that had managed to escape the Panini during the nuking process. I didn’t check the meat content of the meatballs, but this one did not taste like a meatball at all, almost vegetable. In fact, the nearest taste I can compare it to would be bubble and squeak. Before taking another bite, I decided to prise the Panini apart to see how many of the vegetable balls there were to er, enjoy. As you can see, there is a definite lack of tomato relish and grated mozzarella. The sight somewhat put me off and after a few more bites, I gave up and made myself a ham salad sandwich for lunch instead. I scraped out the vegeballs and put them in the cats dish. He took one sniff and turned his nose up in distain. The poor little chap thought he was getting meat.
