Described by one of our Facebook fans as ‘tinned baby sick’, I needed no more incentive to purchase a can for review. I have never tried a tinned Macaroni Cheese before and as this can proudly boasted that this is a new improved recipe I naively thought, ‘how bad can it be? It’s just pasta in a cheese sauce, right?’ I was about to find out.

On opening the tin, it did indeed look like baby sick. I gave the contents a quick sniff before empting into a dish. Nothing. With my nose almost touching the sick macaroni cheese, I got a faint smell of béchamel sauce, without the even the merest hint of cheese. After emptying out the contents I gave the spoon a lick. No cheese, just wallpaper paste béchamel. It wasn’t looking good, so anaemic in fact I decided to look at the ingredients to find out that it included a colouring to make it look this pallid.

So what does it taste like? I would like to give you a detailed description but it is completely tasteless. You fool yourself occasionally that the sauce does have some cheese taste to it, but I think this is purely down to slightly yellow hue it takes on after being microwaved. If you like your pasta ‘al dente’, you’re not going to like the softest most gelatinous pasta I’ve ever tasted in this can. It’s like it’s been boiled for an hour. In conclusion, I’m sure babies will love it, then puke it up and get their first feeling of déjà vu.
