It’s a sad fact that a lot of people will not try offal.  I have no such reservations; in fact, I’m a big fan of food made out of animal gibs.  I’m the only soft southerner I know who loves haggis.  So it will come as no surprise that I relish a good liver Pâté, the courser the better.   However, today I have a bargain offering from Britain’s largest supermarket, ‘Tesco Value Liver & Bacon Spreading Pâté’, which I found while perusing my local store.  Like many Tesco products, after looking at their website, although this is the cheapest Pâté to purchase, their ‘Brussels Pâté’ is actually 1p cheaper per 100g for a mere 8p more.  Looks like I got burned, thanks Tesco, so much for ‘Value’.

I decided to attack the plastic sausage, by hacking off the end with a knife and extruding the ‘meaty’ contents that same way you would squeeze a tube of toothpaste.  The colour was pink but not over-the-top.  A quick sniff and it did indeed smell like liver Pâté but there was something else there, which had to be the Bacon.  Having a quick gander at the ingredients, all the usual suspects you would expect were there, including the crap meat product preservative of choice, Sodium Nitrate.  One very strange ingredient was Vanilla Extract.  What that is doing in a Pâté is anyone’s guess.

So, what does it taste like?  I toasted and buttered a slice of white bread and smeared on a chunk to find out.  The usual taste of liver Pâté hits you straight away then there is another savoury taste that comes through, that is not recognisable as Bacon.  To my palate, it tastes synthetic and makes you wonder if the Pâté maybe going off.  This must be the magical combination of Bacon and Vanilla, quite unpleasant.  I didn’t eat any more.  Your best bet is to splash out another 8p and not eat this horrid meat paste masquerading as Pâté.  Alternatively, buy a liver Pâté and a bag of ‘Frazzles’ bacon flavoured crisps and blend them together with a little lard and a drop of vanilla extract, for your very own ‘homemade’ Liver & Bacon Spreading Pâté!
